Got a craving that just can’t wait until Faturday? Here’s my list of easy substitutes that you may not know about / things I’ve discovered to curb my own cravings!
Want: Sugar and Milk/Cream in coffee
Have: Stevia and Unsweetened Almond or Coconut milk (So Delicious Unsweetened Coconut Milk is my favorite)
Want: Chocolate milk
Have: Blue Diamond’s Unsweetened Chocolate Almond Breeze
Want: Ice cream
Have: Coconut milk ice cream. I haven’t tried making it myself yet, but these mini fudge bars from So Delicious really are so delicious! Gluten and dairy free, there’s no sugar added either (1g of natural sugar), found in the freezer section.
Want: Something crunchy for a quick snack
Have: A handful of roasted, salted pistachios or almonds (my favorite are the jalapeño smokehouse almonds from Bold)
Want: Mashed potatoes
Have: Pureed cauliflower or pureed butter beans
Have: Tea! Experiment with all the teas! I have amassed quite the collection recently, many from Premium Steap in Philadelphia or Celestial Seasonings (found in most supermarkets); I recommend flavored blacks like French Breakfast during the day and flavored greens or herbals like Earl Grey Green and Peppermint for later in the day.
Want: Hot dogs (a childhood favorite of mine, I still get cravings)
Have: Thankfully, there are now several brands providing gluten-free dogs with minimal sugar, but so far these beef & pork weiners from Applegate are the best. They’re uncured and natural, so there is absolutely no sugar (or fake crap), and they come in an all-beef option too.
Have: Butterhead lettuce! I know it sounds crazy, but you can buy hydroponic/aeroponic butterhead lettuce for like $1.99 and the leaves are enormous. We’ve been using them instead of taco shells for beef, pork, and even short rib tacos. Don’t expect leftovers.
Want: Muffins, cupcakes, etc
Have: Flaxseed muffin! 90-second microwavable goodness.
Have: Zucchini or onion pasta (recipes coming soon)
Want: Sandwich (which I do, all the time)
Have: Lettuce wraps with turkey, salami, or buffalo chicken breast OR slice large bell peppers on an angle and use as “bread”
Want: Hot Dogs
Have: Botto’s Hot Italian Sausage (Other “flavors” may also be sugar-free, but I know for sure that this one is)
